Help me find a good cause to donate $100 to.
It could be a cause close to your heart because you or your family benefit directly from it, or it could be a worthy cause that helps people on the other side of the world.
As long as it’s a legitimate cause and easily verifiable I’d love for you to make a nomination in the comments below.
It’s the first time I’ve done this so I’m not seeking to control it excessively. I have no idea how many people will nominate, I’ll just leave it open and see how it goes.
Why is this happening?
The Mona Lisa Million Project is about promoting websites by offering sponsorship of sections of a million pixel Mona Lisa image in exchange for a fee. You can read more about it here, but cutting to the chase, a major part of this project is about sharing the income with good causes.
As I have yet to draw an income from this project, I’ve decided to donate $100 from my own pocket to get the ball rolling.
I know $100 is not a huge amount but it’s a start. If we can make this project fire on all cylinders we’ll be able to donate so much more in the months to come.
What to do now?
If you have a good cause to nominate, leave a comment below giving some details – a short but meaningful description and a link.
I’ll continue to collect nominations until Saturday 18 Sept 2010 at 1pm (London, England time) after which I’ll cut and paste those descriptions into a post along with a link to your site and a link to the good cause. I’ll create a poll and for the rest of the month I’ll encourage people to vote.
The successful cause and the person who nominated them will get a fabulous mention in a post and a prominent link in the sidebar during the month of October.
Can I ask something of you? Would you please pass this on to someone else that you know personally that might be interested in this? You could share it on Twitter, or Digg, and I would certainly be grateful but a personal endorsement to a friend of yours would mean so much more.
So anyway, please do nominate a cause in the comments below.
Thanks
Dave
My nomination:
I would like to nominate Bloggers for Haiti through their Just Giving Page. Set up by EnglishMum this cause has raised over £4,300 GBP ($6600 USD) for a charity called Shelter Box who provide emergency shelters and basic survival equipment for areas hit by disasters.
I’m aware that the Haiti earthquakes happened over six months ago but the people Haiti still need our help. They still need emergency shelters and will do for some time to come.
(It seems only fitting that I should make this my nomination as Haiti was the cause I had in mind when I set up the Mona Lisa Million Project. And just as a matter of interest FOUR of the people with sites on the Mona Lisa have already made donations to Shelter Box via Bloggers for Haiti: Tara, notSupermum, Tim and Maggy.)

Mate, who could possibly argue with the Haiti appeal?
Maybe not what you want to hear really, but I agree with your nomination.

Thanks Tim. It’s good of you to lend your support – you’re a good man!!
Can I nominate Haiti as well? There are lots of great causes out there to support, but Haiti is standing out for me right now.

I am going to nominate International Crisis Aid for the work they do rescuing girls from sex trafficking. I personally can’t think of any cause more worthy, and I only wish I had a million to give them from my own pocket. Their website is: http://www.crisisaid.org/

Anne, thank you. What a wonderful nomination! It’s a beastly trade, it’s callous and despicable. When In the next part of the process I’ll make sure to throw in a few links to the site.
Thanks again!!
I nominate the epilepsy foundation in honor of our Meg who lives with epilepsy! There are so many stigmas still attached to people with epilepsy! Great thing you are doing and I’m sure which ever cause benefits will be grateful!

Brilliant Kirsty, thank you. It’s clearly close to your heart so it would be great to include it.
